Pepper and HALTI headcollar…

I just came back from the second walk of the day with Pepper. It was quite cold today. I forgot to wear my hat so my ears were frozen. Since we could not let Pepper off the leash after the operation, I had to walk him on the road using the leash only. The first 2-3 days after the operation, walking Pepper was a nightmare because he was so upset that he could not run off the leash so he pulled like mad. He tried to run away but because he was still attached to the leash so he had me with him. It was painful to my arms and shoulders, so I decided to use 2 leashes tied them together and wrapped one of them around my waist. Hah! It did not help about his pulling but it helped me not to hurt my arms or shoulders. Yesterday evening I decided to use HALTI Headcollar with him again. We tried to use it with him when he was little but he did not like it. But since he could not get off the leash, I think it should be a good opportunity to make him get used to it. Pepper tried to use his front paws to get the HALTI off his mouth. We tried to ignore it when he stopped we praised him and gave him treats. He was getting better but still tried from time to time.

Today when we were on the way back home, I saw the East Lothian transport bus was parking on the main road awkwardly. When we were at the road I saw the driver was on the pavement holding a chocolate Labrador at its collar. At first I thought he stopped the bus to take his dog out to pee but it was not. He waved at me and tried to ask me if I knew the owner of the dog. He said the dog was running to the road and he managed to catch it. When I had a good look at the dog I thought I knew who owned that dog. I saw that dog before when Pepper was younger. I told him about the house that I thought it might be his owner’s house. I went to that house with him and I was right. I felt good to be able to help that guy and especially that dog.

One Response to “Pepper and HALTI headcollar…”

Hi You were very helpful to the bus driver - it must have made you feel good. I was speaking to a lady in the park in Alva yesterday. She is a puppy walker for the Guide Dogs for the Blind. She has a 10 mth old black lab, a bitch called Dee or Deedee. Pepper would have loved to meet her. Perhaps they will meet sometime. The lady has the lab until she is 1 year old before she goes away for special training. It was good talking to the lady. Dee knows how to ‘off’, ’sit’, ’stay’ etc. Dee, or Deedee reminded me so much of Pepper and how you are training him. You are doing the right things according to the lady!!!!
